Orthopaedic Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy

 Manual and Manipulative Therapy

Manual and manipulative therapy is type of orthopaedic physiotherapy which involves 'hands-on' techniques such as joint mobilization, manipulation, myofascial release and neural tissue mobilization. Goals of treatment include pain relief, increased range of motion and flexibility, improved strength and return to normal function.

There are a number of reasons why patients with vestibular dysfunction may require manual therapy, particularly for the muscles and joints of the neck (cervical spine):

1. The mechanism of injury (for example, a slip and fall, a whiplash disorder, or a concussion) can damage both the vestibular organs and injure structures of the neck.

2. Neck pain can often develop secondary to the vestibular disorder if the patient attempts to control their dizziness by restricting head and neck movements. This 'guarding' of motion can lead to joint and muscle stiffness, significant cervical pain and/or headaches.

3. Neck dysfunction itself can become a source of dizziness, due to connections between the upper cervical nerves and the vestibular system.

It is essential, therefore, that therapists providing VRT also have training in advanced manual therapy skills to manage problems in the cervical spine. Newland VRT is pleased to offer this adjunct therapy, if necessary.
