Frequently asked questions about vestibular rehabilitation therapy

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Why should I choose Newland VRT at The Centre for Health and Sports Medicine?

We strive to offer the highest level of patient care. Our clinic uses the most recent research-based protocols, including the use of infrared goggle technology to more accurately diagnose your vestibular condition. Treatment sessions are always one-on-one with the physiotherapist; No portion of the treatment is delegated to assistants. The wait times at our clinic are also significantly shorter than hospital-based programs, which can be several months long. This means, that when you receive treatment at our clinic, you get back to work, play and your life, faster.

Q: Do I need a referral from my doctor?

Although you do not need a referral to see a physiotherapist, some insurance companies require a physician's referral. Please check with your insurance provider.

Given that there are a number of causes for dizziness, it is wise to inform your doctor about your symptoms.

Q: Does insurance cover Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT)?

At our clinic, VRT is provided by Kara Newland, a Registered Physiotherapist.  If you have extended health care benefits for physiotherapy services, you can submit your invoices to your insurer for reimbursement. Please check with your insurance provider to determine your level of coverage.

Q: How long are my appointments and how many appointments will I need?

The initial assessment will take 1 hour and the follow-up sessions are generally 30 minutes. The type of treatment will depend on your exact diagnosis. Some vestibular disorders, such as BPPV can resolve with 2-3 sessions. Other more complex conditions, however, may require additional sessions and home exercises.

Q: What can I do to prepare for my assessment?

Please visit the patient information page for details and downloadable forms.

Q: Do you offer other healthcare services?

In addition to VRT and orthopaedic physiotherapy, The Centre for Health and Sports Medicine also offers a number of Allied Health Professional services, such as Registered Massage Therapy (RMT), Osteopathy, Athletic Therapy (AT), Nutritional Counselling, personal training, and Occupational Therapy (OT). We have in-house services to fit and fabricate braces, orthotics and custom splints.
